Melissa Sungela serves as Wakefern’s Vice President of Corporate Finance & Tax, where her responsibilities include leading the Finance Transformation Project to upgrade automated solutions and reorganize the related organizational structure. She provides proactive analysis and insights into new tax reforms at both the federal and local levels, along with implementing new accounting regulatory changes, including related system and process changes. Since joining Wakefern in 2016, Melissa has led compliance with several new tax laws, including the Tax Cut and Jobs Act of 2017, the Philadelphia Beverage Tax, and sales tax audits resulting from the Supreme Court’s recent Wayfair v. South Dakota decision. In addition, she is leading the implementation of the new Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) rules for Lease Accounting and Revenue Recognition. Melissa began her career at KPMG, LLP, spending her final three years in the company’s national office. She served in a variety of increasing leadership positions at Honeywell, GE Healthcare, The Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company, and Coty before joining Wakefern. She lives in River Vale, New Jersey with her husband Ken and is the proud mother of three children – Emma, Luke and Colton – and their dog Carly.
